Studies Have Indicated a Link Between Zoloft and Birth Defects

Zoloft has been linked to birth defects since 2006 including intestinal, heart and respiratory defects:

  • In 2007, the New England Journal of Medicine found an increased risk of omphalocele (intestines protruding through the belly button), heart septal defects (atrial septal defect or ventricular septal defect), anal atresia and limb reduction defects associated with Zoloft (Sertraline)
  • In 2009, the British Medical Journal indicated an increased fetal risk of heartseptal defects (atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect) in women who ingested Zoloft (Sertraline) during pregnancy
  • In 2010, the Clinical Epidemiology revealed an overall risk of cardiac malformations, particularly septal defects associated with Zoloft (Sertraline)
  • In 2011, the Birth Defects Research journal disclosed a link between respiratory system defects and Zoloft (Sertraline)

Additionally, the FDA issued a warning in 2006, for all SSRIs including Zoloft, regarding the association between persistent pulmonary hypertension in newborns (“PPHN”) and SSRIs.
